RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
