The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
