TikTok Provides Users Power to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that enables them to lessen the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts more than 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a global launch. This advancement coincides with a surge in AI content, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the quickest rising channels on another major platform exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the ability to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” commented a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. Overall, over 100 million pieces of content are added to the app each day, making AI content a minor portion of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI content they see by opening the topic control option in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be controlled under the filter cover politics, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies mandate creators to identify convincing AI-made content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will now apply an artificially created tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This measure is intended to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is also establishing a $2m educational fund for professionals and groups to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will assist non-profit groups specializing in educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its content review process, following debate over proposals to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by staff. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
